Pisa, a maritime republic on the Arno
A thousand years ago Pisan ships ruled the western Mediterranean, and the wealth of that trade built the city's masterpiece: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto and the world's most famous bell tower, all in white marble on the lawn of Piazza dei Miracoli.
Beyond the square lies a lively university town: the riverside Lungarni, Borgo Stretto and Piazza dei Cavalieri. Lucca is half an hour away, Florence an hour, the beaches of Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia fifteen minutes.
